A Niagara Landmark – The Crowne Plaza Hotel Part 2

The land on which this hotel stands, was originally owned by Philip George Bender, one of the first settlers in what is now the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario. While a young man, he emigrated from Germany to New Jersey, and later moved to the Philadelphia area. While there the American Revolution broke out. As Tories, or Loyalists, he and his wife were driven from their home and persecuted to the point where they decided to relocate into Canada. As a result, in the winter of 1776, they became part of a group of 53 Loyalists who followed the wilderness trail to Niagara.

The journey was a very difficult one. Some, unable to continue, dropped out and were cared for by sympathizers. Others succumbed to disease, exhaustion, cold and hunger. The following April, only seven out of the 53 Loyalists, including the Benders, reached Fort Niagara. Standing on the east side of the Niagara River, where it empties into Lake Ontario, the fort was still controlled by the British. Here Phillip joined Butler’s Rangers, a force that raided American frontier settlements. In 1782, because of his loyalty and service, the British government awarded Bender a large tract of land on the Canadian side of the Niagara River facing the Falls.

This Crown Grant eventually totalled some 390 acres. The Bender house stood immediately to the southwest of the site now occupied by the Crowne Plaza. Bender Street (or Hill) just north of the hotel commemorates this pioneer family. The hotel’s planning stages began in 1927, with work beginning in early January 1929. Establishing a record for this particular type of construction in Canada, the Pigott Company of Hamilton, Ontario, completed the large project in just six months.

Originally named the Hotel General Brock, it opened for business July 1, 1929. Built at a cost of $1.5 million, the hotel boasted 260 rooms and such features as a roof garden, fireproof construction and a large ballroom, along with the last word in comfort and beauty. The local press described it as a “mammoth edifice, gleaming white in the sunlight, classic in appearance, looming over the Niagara River.” The Crowne Plaza has played host to many famous personalities. Some of these include Marilyn Monroe, Walt Disney, Gene Autry, Jack Paar, Jimmy Stewart, Shirley Temple, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Princess Margaret (sister of Queen Elizabeth II).

In more recent years, the hotel has played host to actresses Angelica Houston, Jessica Tandy and Bridget Fonda. Actors Matt Dillon, Matthew Perry, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, and Jackie Chan have also been guests. Recent Canadian Prime Ministers Paul Martin, Joe Clark and Stephen Harper also paid the Brock a visit. On June 7, 1939, King George VI of England and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, visited Niagara Falls as part of their cross-Canada tour. After viewing the famous Cataracts, the royal couple was driven to the Brock Plaza where some 12,000 school children were gathered around the hotel to greet their majesties. The King and Queen later had dinner in the Rainbow Room.

Hotels and motels typically serve a different purpose and yet still in the same industry. Both provide lodging to out of town guests and the standard rooms may be similar but there are vast differences between the two. The most obvious example as one traveling through rural Montana would not expect to find a luxury hotel similar to those in Las Vegas. Motels are typically found roadside in mountain towns or smaller cities and focus on offering travelers a place to stop and rest on the journey to another destination. Hotels are typically places that people reserve rooms in with the intention of staying a few days and therefore they often offer more of the conveniences that one would expect to have at home. It is not uncommon for hotel rooms to have small kitchens or even a couch or small living area to allow guests to have a place to feel comfortable in when taking a break from local attractions.

As stated before motels are typically designed to provide a place to stay for one night and they often having parking right outside the room for easy unloading of luggage. Motel 6 is the most popular motel chain and the design is similar in most of their locations, they are set up in either a U shape with a center courtyard or a square. This allows for cars to be seen from the room in order to keep a close watch on valuables. Typically motels don’t have room service or offer any type of breakfast but often have vending machines for snacking. They are almost always located on or immediately off of a main route and are often near restaurants that are open 24 hours or at least extended hours. Occasionally a motel will have a pool, usually outdoor, and some type of laundry service. However, in general one can expect a motel to be very affordable, conveniently located and offer a reasonable option for an overnight stay.

Hotels come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Some budget hotels can be the same price as a motel but offer interior corridors, pool, laundry service and possibly even a small breakfast. On the average a standard hotel is designed for guests to spend more than one day and rooms will include hair dryers, irons, cable TV and movie channels. Guests can expect most mid range priced hotels to have a pool, possibly a fitness room and occasionally a modest menu for room service. As the price increases so do the amenities. The more expensive hotels, especially in large cities, are consistently trying to offer the best amenities on the block to draw guests in. Most hotels in this price range will have an in house restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. Some may have resort style pools, fitness centers and in destinations that are popular with families these types of hotels will also have kid friendly amenities. Luxury hotels in large cities such as: Las Vegas, New York, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami may have amenities that might possibly cause your jaw to drop. The sky is the limit when it comes to extravagance in big city hotels but expect to pay for it.

Ultimately, the major difference aside from the price is the purpose behind each one. Motels are great for one-night stops and give you the rest you need to continue on, while hotels are where you may unpack the suitcase and stay awhile.

Visiting the 4th largest city of the United States for the first time or it is your returning visit, if you have not visited landmarks of the Houston, you may not consider your visit completed. There are some places for every city which become identity of the city not only in the country but also internationally the cities are known for their landmarks. Houston is known for many great things such its museums, its grand aquarium, and for its skyscrapers. If you have reached in the city via air travel and landed at Houston’s George Bush International Airport, you will find many of the Houston hotels near the airport. JP Morgan Chase tower is undisputed and most advanced building of the city. It is also a great place to start your tour to Houston.
